Welcome to online learning

Hi all hope you are well.  If you have been working over the last two weeks you have part of the assignment for this week done already.

We are posting all assignments here as well as on schoology.  Any physical assignments bookwork or worksheets must be photographed and returned via e-mail by the due date.  The discussion questions must be answered on the schoology website.

Step 1:  Answer the activating strategy found in the schoology foler and check your answer with the link provided, Then watch the videos associated with Alternating Series (which have been on the blog)

https://people.math.osu.edu/miller.4962/ximeraLessons/AST/story_html5.html   (alternating series basics)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs9O255gdEY  (alternating series remainders)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORTI4kk1okM  (altrernating series absolute versus conditional convergence)

Additional resources:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsMom3yNsX8  (Kahn video on basics of alternating series not as in depth as the OSU one above)

http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/CalcII/AlternatingSeries.aspx  (this is a nice written site from lamar university for those who don't like video.  It also has nice practice problems with solutions)

Step 2:  Do the assignment from your textbook that is provided and take a picture of it and e-mail it back to Mr. Halstead.  Pg 586-587  #11, 14, 16, 17, 24, 25, 37, 42, 43.    Due date on the book work is Monday 4-6-20 by 12:00 P.M.

Step 3:  Go to schoology and answer the discussion question under the alternating series folder.  Just type your response.

Step 4:  Keep working on your practice exam (due apr 15th) , LCT/DCT bookwork (due Friday), Prediction packer problems.

Step 5:  If you have completed Alternating series videos and understand it get ahead and watch the videos online on ratio and root test if you have not.  That is going to be Monday/Tuesday of next weeks work.  We will then wrap up next week with power series which is the first new thing not on the blog Wed/Thu

(Halstead/Straub notes from last year)

I will post the LCT/DCT hwk answers on the blog Monday morning.

Check both schoology and the blog on Monday for next weeks work and assignments.  Once video has been approved for instruction we will run some kind of review/lesson component in the future.

As always if questions arise as you are doing these topics please e-mail us and I will reply at some point during school hours as quickly as we can.

Thanks (You guys are awesome),
Mr. Halstead

Test Run

We are going to give zoom a twirl tomorrow and work out some of the kinks.  There is going to be no instruction but we can see what it looks like, lag, touch base etc.........

I am thinking that we will meet at 2:00 for like 30 minutes or so.  I am hoping this medium will work to be able to instruct you over the course of the next few weeks.

Remember to get your book work done and e-mail it to me by next Wednesday, keep working on your practice test, check out the AP review videos by the college board using the link from a previous post, work on prediction problems from your packet, and watch the alternating series video stuff as that will be the first lesson we go through quickly.

I have also set p a remind but can't give you code yet as some snafu occured and I am waiting on a password reset.

Excited to touch base,
Mr. H

Some updates on information

Hi all, hope all are safe and well:

We did get some information from the college board over the weekend.  The AP tests are going to be modified severely this year.  There will be no multiple-choice section and the exam will be 45 minutes of free response which we are assuming will be 3 free response questions.  We are hearing the exam will be taken from home using a secure browser, but do not know the details on that yet.  There will be two test dates an earlier one and a later one but we have not heard if that will be your choice or the schools as to when to assess.  They will be giving us more information on what the test will look like according to them by April 3rd.

They have reduced the content and taken away Unit 9 (polar and parametric derivatives, and applications) and some of Unit 10 (series) from the CED.  This means we have taught everything to you that is one the exam with the exception of Alternating Series test which you have our previous notes and the online resources we posted on the blog to help you.  Limit Comparison test which there is the online resources to go through on the blog and our previous notes and Taylor and McLaurin polynomials which we will post online resources to help you with soon.

To read the full release you can go the college board websitehttps://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update

We will also post resources for the material that they have eliminated from the exam at a later date as it will be important for you in Calc 2/Calc 3 when you take them in your future at college.  Even though they are not testing on those subjects, your college professors will expect you to be able to discuss and solve problems related to those topics.

In addition, there will be AP review sessions run by the college board on the topics above and other topics and they can be found using the URL below.  They will be personally taught by a member of the college board and I would think give you a strong sense of what they are expecting from these missing topics if they put them as one of the FRQ’s.  We have already covered these topics, but it might be nice to watch them and let them soak in.  You can watch them live or supposedly later by what they have told us.

To find the schedule of all AP Classes and when the reviews will occur you can click herehttps://apstudents.collegeboard.org/coronavirus-updates#free-ap-classes

The Calc BC review sessions will take place starting on Wednesday 3/25 from 2-2:45. They reviews will be live. Here is a link to the Calc BC review sessions:

So, remember the stuff that was assigned before we left (practice exam, and DCT and LCT hwk assignment is still going to be due and must be completed.)  Hopefully you worked on that stuff some last week.  If you are missing anything in gradebook, please do the work and e-mail to me and we will get it in gradebook once you do so.  We have not heard anything as far as county policies on benchmarks etc… moving forward, but I will still post a benchmark review by Wednesday.  Just focus on other things until we hear if that is going to be something that is still in play or not.

As far as this week is concerned, you should then be getting back to things at a high level.  Work on the stuff that is due eventually, watch the suggested videos and notes from the blog, watch the AP videos from the college board, and practice problems from the FRQ prediction packet that we gave you since that is what the exam this year is essentially going to be.

I will be playing with zoom this week and trying to learn it.  So hopefully by the end of the week or the beginning of next week we can have a live session where you can interact with us.  Miss you guys and know that you will work hard to keep yourself up to date as we see where we will be going from here.
                                                                                                                                 Mr. Halstead

Update and gentle reminders that you should be working by now some each day!!

Hi all:

Hope you are inside and staying safe and starting to spend time with the links on series I provided so we can meet the challenges of the next couple of weeks.

There is an AP classroom assignment up for extra credit.  Its due date is Tuesday.  There will be another one posted on Tuesday that will be due on Sunday of next week again for extra credit.

You definitely should be watching the link on Limit comparison test by now, and starting to process that series test.  If you e-mail me any questions I will do my best to answer them online.  I will usually check my e-mail sometime in the morning, formulate my response, and reply by dinner.

I have had to travel to the hospital several times this week with a family situation and they are limiting visitors.  My car seat does not have WiFi so please be patient but I will respond.

You then should be moving on to the link on Alternating series test and have that knocked out by Tuesday or so of next week.  So you can end next week dealing with Ratio and Root test link.

Remember there are links to my physical notes from last year on the post for the Hwk for DCT and LCT.

Remember this is also a wonderful time to spend quality time with your prediction packet and the 2012 practice exam and have it out of the way for when we return.

I miss seeing you guys and hope to hear from you if you are struggling with the online material.

The next two weeks, what it means for us!!!!

Hi all, please stay safe over the next two weeks, but we have not heard anything about an AP test move date.  So we are going to post some material for you to preview and be looking through.  We are going to have to cover this material very quickly when we return, probably a 1-day summary of each at the most.

We are going to post some suggested videos and accompanying notes that we highly suggest that you work through in your time at home.  These are not assignments that are worth a grade, but they will make your life easier when you return.

In addition remember you have some long term due dates that are still in effect.

A)  Hwk DCT and LCT (see blog, due the day after we return)
B)  AP practice test 2012 (due after spring break, but a good time to knock it out)
C)  AP Prediction packet (Not an assignment but again a  good time to get a lot done)
D)  Benchmark Review guide (Not an assignment but will be posted for your benefit)  Once I hear of a new Benchmark date it was to be the 24th, I will post it on the blog
E)  Check AP classroom as any assignments given there will be extra credit over break.  There will be a max of two during the two week period.

We will be using the site below is a great one to use to continue your learning:

https://mslc.osu.edu/math-1152-online-lessons

Week 1:  Direct Comparison Test/Limit Comparison Test/ Alternating Series Test:

https://people.math.osu.edu/miller.4962/ximeraLessons/comparisonTests/story_html5.html (this is a lesson on your comparison tests Direct and limit)

https://people.math.osu.edu/miller.4962/ximeraLessons/AST/story_html5.html  (this is a lesson on the alternating series test)

Week 2:  Ratio and Root test

https://people.math.osu.edu/miller.4962/ximeraLessons/ratioTestAndRootTest/story_html5.html (this is a lesson on the ratio and root tests)

Remember that the videos and other stuff that I post that is not bolded above is not due for any credit, but highly suggested that you work your way through it for our return.  This should be plenty to work on when you look at it in total.   It is essentially like you are in college and now are responsible for some of your own learning.  I will miss you and hope above all that you are safe and well, and look forward to when we can experience the joys of Calculus together again.

This blog will be our lifeline while we are out and definitely should be checked every couple of days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See you soon,
Mr. Halstead
